Common Questions for Beginners

What is the best age to start martial arts?

At US Taekwondo, we accept students as young as 3 years old. Our Little Tigers (Ages 3-5) program is designed specifically for preschoolers to build focus and coordination. We also have specialized classes for Kids (6-12), Teens, and Adults. It is never too early, or too late, to start.

Do I need to be in shape before I sign up?

No. This is a common myth! You do not need to be fit to start martial arts; you start martial arts to get fit. Our instructors are trained to modify exercises for every fitness level, from total beginners to athletes.

How much does martial arts cost?

We believe in transparency. To help you get started without a big commitment, we offer a $99 Intro Special which includes 4 Classes and a Free Uniform. After your trial, we have various membership options (Monthly, Family Plans, etc.) that we can review with you based on your training goals.

Do you offer family discounts?

Yes! We love when families train together. We offer significant discounts for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th family member. Check out our Family Classes page for more details.

Is Taekwondo safe for my child?

Safety is our #1 priority. We train on professional, high-impact mats to prevent injury. Our curriculum is supervised by Grandmaster Kim and certified instructors who emphasize controlled technique. While bumps and bruises can happen in any sport, serious injuries are very rare in our structured environment.

Will martial arts make my child aggressive?

No. In fact, it does the opposite. We teach that martial arts is for self-defense only. Aggressive behavior is not tolerated in the dojo. By learning to control their body and emotions, students actually become calmer, more respectful, and less likely to initiate conflict.

Is sparring (fighting) required?

For beginners, absolutely not. New students focus on fitness, forms (patterns), and bag work. Sparring is introduced gradually at intermediate levels and is always done with full protective gear and strict supervision. You will never be forced to spar if you are uncomfortable.

My child has ADHD/Focus issues. Can they handle this?

Yes. Many of our most successful students started with us because they struggled with focus. Our class structure provides clear expectations, immediate feedback, and short, high-energy drills that are perfect for neurodiverse children. We partner with parents to help build their attention span over time.

How long does it take to get a Black Belt?

Earning a Black Belt is a marathon, not a sprint. On average, it takes a dedicated student 3 to 5 years to earn their 1st Degree Black Belt. At U.S. Taekwondo, we do not "sell" belts; every rank is earned through testing, memorization, and demonstrated skill.

What should my child wear to their first class?

For your very first trial class, comfortable workout clothes (t-shirt and sweatpants) are perfect. When you sign up for our Intro Special, you will receive an official Taekwondo Uniform (Dobok) to wear for future classes.

Is your school certified?

Yes. Unlike many local rec programs, we are a Kukkiwon Certified school aligned with the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF). This means your rank is recognized globally, and we adhere to the highest standards of the International Olympic Committee.
